Introduction
The
IAAF (International Amateur Athletic Federation) unified in
1998, seven of the most prestigious outdoor athletic Meetings
across Europe to create the IAAF Golden League.
In its fourth consecutive year, the IAAF Golden League 2002
will be held under ideal climatic conditions between June
and September, in cities filled with athletic qualities and
cultural beauty. There exists one vision which unites all
participating athletes: to win your discipline at five of
the seven IAAF Golden League Meetings and claim a share of
the IAAF Golden League Jackpot of 50 kilos of gold. In 1998,
three of the worlds best athletes, Marion Jones, Haile
Gebrselassie and Hicham El Guerrouj, shared in the IAAF Golden
League Jackpot whilst in 1999 only two lucky athletes, Gabriela
Szabo and Wilson Kipketer claimed a larger portion each. After
the final IAAF Golden League Meeting in 2000, the ISTAF Berlin,
the following athletes had achieved five victories in their
discipline and could stake a claim for a share of the IAAF
Golden League Jackpot: Gail Devers, Maurice Greene, Hicham
El Guerrouj, Tatyana Kotova and Trine Solberg-Hattestad.
